Ángel Barrios, the Granada Composer Raised in an Alhambra Tavern
Ángel Barrios grew up in El Polinario, his father's tavern on Calle Real de la Alhambra, and became Falla's landlord, friend and compadre. What survives.
Ángel Barrios was born in Granada on 4 January 1882 and died in Madrid in 1964. A composer and guitarist, he founded the Trío Iberia in 1900 and directed the Victoria Eugenia Conservatory in Granada from 1928 to 1939. His family lived in the Calle Real de la Alhambra, in a house known as the El Polinario tavern. Manuel de Falla was his compadre, companion and tenant, and godfather to his daughter Ángela.
His trace is on the Alhambra hill. The Alhambra district holds Calle Real, the family's address, and his daughter donated his legacy to the Patronato de la Alhambra, which shows it in a small museum on the Alhambra grounds. The Granada Fine Arts Museum hosted the Alhambra's exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of his death. Falla's carmen in the Antequeruela Alta is today the Casa-Museo Manuel de Falla.

1808–today
French troops held Granada from 1810 until 17 September 1812 and mined the Alhambra's towers on leaving; eight fell. On Christmas night 1884 a Mw 6.7 earthquake wrecked villages around Alhama de Granada, though not the city itself. On 20 July 1936 a garrison revolt took the centre, and the Albaicín held out under artillery fire until the 23rd.
