Two windows each year turn the streets around the Cathedral into the busiest square metre of the city. During Semana Santa, processions pass the Cathedral itself, and rooms with a view of the route, Room Mate Leo among them, sell out first. Corpus Christi in late May and June does the same to the centre at lower intensity. Book three to four months ahead for either, earlier if you want a specific room rather than merely a room. Small properties such as Palacio de los Navas clear out fast because a handful of bookings empties them. Outside these weeks, the same hotels usually have space three or four weeks ahead.

This is the right base for a first visit with a packed itinerary: Cathedral, Royal Chapel and Alcaicería before lunch, Albaicín in the afternoon, all on foot and none of it steep. The ground is flat, taxis and buses converge here, and luggage rolls from the airport bus stop to most doors. Families manage better than in the hill quarters for exactly that reason. The counter-case is atmosphere: blocks around Calle Mesones and Reyes Católicos are commercial Granada, and rooms facing them hear the weekend noise. For character, travellers pick Hospes Palacio de los Patos, whose garden spa sits five minutes from the Cathedral frontage, or cross to the Albaicín entirely. The spread runs from a €4 dorm at El Granado Hostel upward, so almost any budget fits.

From seven in the morning the square belongs to people climbing Cuesta de Gomérez with Alhambra tickets on their phones, and the cafés on its north side open for exactly them. By noon the tourist flow peaks and the terraces fill. By nine at night the tapas bars towards the Carrera del Darro are the loudest thing in the district. Guests at Oasis Backpackers' Hostel get the social version of all this, while El Ladrón de Agua, five minutes up into the Albaicín, hears almost none of it. Light sleepers should read addresses carefully: rooms on the square itself take early delivery noise; rooms one street along Carrera del Darro take river sounds and church bells instead, which is a fair trade.

The honest comparison is with the Realejo, the old quarter on the Alhambra's south slope, and with the deeper Albaicín itself. Both offer more silence and more character per euro: Escudo del Carmen, down in the Realejo, starts below many Plaza Nueva mid-rangers. Neither puts three districts within a ten-minute radius of one door. If your plan is the early Alhambra slot followed by an Albaicín afternoon and dinner in Centro, Plaza Nueva saves real hours and tired legs, which is why the square books first. If you are staying a week and want to live like a resident, take the flatter, quieter option and accept the extra fifteen minutes. First trips suit the square; long stays usually outgrow it.

The Chapel opens at ten, and the queue on Calle Oficios forms well before then in summer. Staying within two hundred metres converts that from a planning problem into a non-event: leave Palacio de los Navas at five to ten and you are among the first through the door, with the tombs almost to yourself before the groups arrive. Do the same at the Cathedral across the block, buy the combined ticket, and both interiors are done by noon with the rest of the day free. Guests at Room Mate Leo on Calle Mesones have essentially the same option. Anyone based near the Alhambra loses an hour of prime morning just getting here, which matters more than it sounds in August.

Centro is functional Granada: flat, connected, and shorter on romance than the Albaicín. Streets around the Chapel mix monument queues with everyday commerce, and weekend nights get loud around Calle Reyes Católicos and Mesones, so ask for an interior-facing room when booking; AC Hotel Granada and Barceló Carmen Granada run modern soundproofing that older palaces cannot match. Parking is the other tax: nothing near the Chapel offers it, and the underground car parks charge by the hour, which pushes drivers toward a park-and-ride on the edge of town. None of this bothers travellers arriving by train or plane. It decides things for everyone arriving by car.
