Granada Artisan Crafts: Taracea, Fajalauza and the Workshop Trail
Granada's Nasrid craft heritage lives on in its old-city workshops. Taracea marquetry, Fajalauza ceramics and hand-tooled leather: how to find the real thing.
From free walking tours and open patios to wine tastings under €10 — the best of Granada does not require a big budget.
Granada is one of the few major tourist cities in Spain where the best experiences cost little or nothing. The Alhambra gardens can be entered free of charge when visiting the Generalife, the Granada Cathedral is a short walk from everywhere in the historic centre, and the Sacromonte cave district is always open to explore on foot. Free walking tours depart daily from Plaza Nueva, covering the Albaicín, the Realejo and the old Arab quarter in around two hours (tip-based). Granada still operates on the free tapas tradition — order a drink and a plate arrives unrequested, which means you can eat well for the cost of a caña. For activities under €25, the range is solid: flamenco intro classes in the Sacromonte, wine tastings of Alpujarra and Costa Tropical wines at local bodegas, olive oil tastings from Sierra Nevada producers, and guided Albaicín walks. The key to Granada on a budget: plan around free entry windows, walk instead of taking taxis (the old town is steep but compact), and book directly rather than through hotel concierges.
